Gender & Society

After reading the Orestian Trilogy I wondered how I was going to be able to write a paper relating or to our readings in class. Most of the readings have been very interesting, even though long, but these Greek tragedies were very hard to grasp. The plots were not boring by any means but the way it was written made it hard for me to follow events. I decided to focus on the subject of murder and the significance of it in these plays and our other readings.
At the beginning of Agamemnon, Agamemnon and Menelaus have returned home after the fall of Troy at their hands. During this time Agamemnon had also sacrificed his oldest daughter, Iphigenia, so he would be able to successfully fell Troy. Awaiting his return is his wife, Clytemnestra who has entered into an adulterous relationship in his absence with one of his sworn enemies. She appears to anxiously waiting for her husband’s return but is planning to avenge the sacrificial slaying of their daughter by murdering her husband. Involved with her in this treachery is her lover, Aegisthus, who is her husband’s cousin. The verse goes on to state, “For in the home a dreadful anger awaits. It does not forget and cannot be appeased. Its treachery controls the house, waiting to avenge a slaughtered child.” They plot Agamemnon’s murder and Clytemnestra violently kills both him and Cassandra, the prophetess who he has brought back as a slave and concubine.

Crimes & Misdemeanors

In Woody Allen’s film “Crimes and Misdemeanors”, there are no less than four different tales wove into one film. All of Woody Allen’s films show that he is more than the typical Hollywood filmmaker in that the characters portrayed always appear to be going through the life experiences that most human beings go through.
In “Crimes and Misdemeanors” the two main characters are Cliff Stern played by Woody Allen and Judah Rosenthal played by Martin Landau. The main plot revolves around these two characters. Cliff is an unsuccessful filmmaker who believes that his work is not successful because he is such a purist and not compromising in his standards. He is also a hopeless romantic, which is a common theme for Allen’s characters in his film. Judah is a successful ophthalmologist and also appears to the community to be a philanthropist and a man devoted to his family. They are both involved in adulterous affairs in one form or another. Cliff’s affair with Halley never appears to be physically consummated and is more wishful thinking on Cliff’s part. Judah’s affair with Delores, an airline stewardess, has going on for several years. He tries to end it with her when it becomes more intimate than he wants and she threatens to destroy his carefully constructed image if he does not leave his wife and marry her. He becomes desperate and
ends their affair in a very final manner.

End Of A Long Week

It has been a very looooong week. Rachel left last Sunday for a summer job in South Carolina. Her girl stalled in Georgia, but after ten or fifteen minutes it started again. We still do not know why it stalled. It makes me nervous not knowing whether her car is reliable when she is so far away. We do have family there so I know she will be ok but it still makes me worry.
Then that same night Ariel turned on the oven to preheat. I was sitting outside when she came to the door and beckoned me in with her finger and a strange look on her face. I went back in and she said, "there's a fire." Very quiet, almost calm. I go in the kitchen and there is a pretty big fire in the oven. The only thing I could think was to grab a bag of flour and start throwing it on the flames. If it was grease, water would just make it worse. I finally got it out. God, what a mess! I cleaned all the flour up the next day but I still need to finish cleaning the rest of it up. I think Ariel was in shock. She came down and told me later that flour could actually contain small explosive particles. So I went out the next day and bought a small fire extinquisher. After the fact but I want to be prepared if it ever happens again.

Gonna Rain Again...

I am sitting here listening to the old time blues show on WEVL. Steve does a great job. Creates a real mood. It goes especially well with the weather outside right now. Oh, Sonny Boy Williams! It's about to rain...again. But I noticed a strange, almost electric smell in the air while I was out back enjoying the breeze. Or maybe it's a plastic smell or electric, plasticky. It smells strange, but somehow pleasant and natural. I don't know how plastic smell natural but it does. I hear the raindrops staring to fall now so I am glad I went out earlier. There goes the thunder along with some Muddy Waters. I love thunder storms. As long as I don't have to drive, I hate driving in nasty weather. It's nasty when you have to drive in it. It's wonderful when you can sit back and enjoy a good storm.
Oh by the way, WEVL's Spring Pledge Drive starts tomorrow (Friday) so tune in. I don't mean to harp on it but the station always needs new members, listener supported you know. So WEVL Memphis, 89.9 FM/www.wevl.org.

Part 4

Memphis, Shelby County and the surrounding area have been known as a “bankruptcy capital” for as long as I can remember. I noted over the years I have been doing property research that some people are multiple offenders when It comes to filing bankruptcy. That would mainly be chapter thirteen bankruptcies where the court reorganizes your debts and you still pay your creditors, just at a lower amount. I don’t know how many times you can file this type of bankruptcy but I have seen where some people would file for chapter thirteen one year after another. And then eventually go ahead file for chapter seven which wipes out their debt.
The public needs to educate themselves on their finances and learn from past financial mistakes. When you sign a document making a financial commitment, know what you are signing. And never be afraid or in too much of a hurry to ask questions. Almost everyone wants a home of their own, but does it have to be the biggest house on the block? It would be a wise idea to learn from generation that grew up during the Depression who saved and bought what they could afford.

WEVL Spring Pledge Drive

WEVL Spring Pledge Drive begins this Friday so my pledge drive show is the next Tuesday. I have decided to do a theme program and the theme is sad songs. I don't just mean love songs, any sad song (preferably not Top 40 and no FCC not allowed words). Murder ballads are good, songs about war, anything sad or poignant. It does not have to be a slow song, it can even have an uptempo beat.
Now some may think that sad songs are, well, just too sad. But I have come to find out over the last eleven years(11 years this month) of Pathways that most people, myself included, really like a good sad song. A sad song can actually make you feel better. Maybe it's the fact that someone else feels or has felt the same way you do. You could even use the term "feels your pain".
If you have any good suggestions, pass them on. I am not promising I will use it, but I will consider all suggestions. My real dilemma has been trying to come up with a good title for the program. I need it to convey the subject matter but not come across negative. If you have any ideas in that direction, once more, pass them on.
And finally, like I said, it's a pledge drive so we need new members. You can find out all about becoming a member of WEVL at http://www.wevl.org/. Thanks

Tax Time

It is almost April Fifteenth again. Tax Time. I actually filed early this year, I mailed them last week. For me that is earlier. I had to pay, it was painful. Death and taxes, an old phrase but it is true that both will get you sooner or later. Writing that check hurt my feelings but I kind of knew it would be the case. So now I am really poor, so much for savings. I filed separate this year, I did not want to be responsible for my soon to be ex husband's tax bill also. It was the best thing for me and I don't think he would want to be responsible for mine either. My CPA said the IRS goes for the deepest pockets when there is a problem with someone not paying. My pockets are empty.

Rachel On The Run

Rachel is leaving again. I hate it but it is a good thing. Her Aunt Nancy helped her get a job for the summer teaching English. It is at a language school in South Carolina and it is in an ESL program. Plus her aunt is developing a software program for teaching English aimed at the 13 to 30 age group. and she wants to pay Rach to help her edit it. So that is good.
I wish she was going to be here longer so I could spend time with her before she leaves for Germany again. She says she's going back but she has to have a job there first. So while she is in South Carolina we can go visit and go to the beach. Her grandmother is there too so she will be able to visit and spend time with here. The girls were always very close to their grandparents.
I hope this job helps her onto better things. Right now she is trying to figure out how much the IRS will get out of what she makes. I think I just heard. "It's not fair!" Tell me.

Knowing When To Stop

I really love my two daughters. Faults and all...theirs, not mine. Take my oldest daughter, Rachel. I love her. But she has a very annoying habit, she does not know when the joke is over. She does not know when to stop. Ask her sister, Ariel. She'll tell you. Ask me. I am glad she is home but right now she is playing ABBA loudly in my ear and singing along. I told her I was doing homework but when she is bored she gets very annoying. O God, German rap! It does not sound the same, does not flow. And I do not really care for rap anyway. But Rachel, She keeps on and on. I kept getting phone calls from an unknown number that would hang up, it was her. But she kept it up even after I knew it was her, then she started on Ariel. I have to find her something to do.
